THE JACK AND DORIS SHADBOLT FOUNDATION FOR THE VISUAL ARTS The Foundation supports an annual awards programme created and financed by Jack and Doris Shadbolt in 1988 as a “contribution to the advancement of the visual arts in British Columbia and their appreciation by the public.” Two awards of 10,000 dollars each, called the VIVA Awards, have been granted annually to mid-career artists, chosen for outstanding achievement and commitment by an independent jury. Every fifth year an Honour Award of 50,000 dollars was granted to a person who has had a sustained, historically significant influence on the visual arts in British Columbia. The awards were presented at invitational receptions and publicized in the media. Since its inception, 38 VIVA Awards and 3 Honour Awards have been realized. While the Honour awards are presently suspended, the Foundation continues its VIVA Awards programme of granting two 12,000 dollar awards annually. They are presented at an awards evening, organized and hosted by the Vancouver Art Gallery. Inquiries The Shadbolt Foundation operates under the auspices of a Board of Trustees. It is a registered charity, issuing income tax related receipts for financial contributions. The Foundation welcomes enquiries, but does not accept applications for awards. |
